Every part of this piece was made by hand. It was cut on my scroll saw, then carved, shaped, and sanded to give each curve and drip the dimension it deserves. The elephant it made from mdf that I painted and the tusks are spalted maple. The mosaic backer is crafted from black walnut with purple heart accents, and the frame is reinforced with purple heart splines — adding both strength and a vibrant pop of color that carries around the border of this already lively elephant.
I started this piece on a whim. It wasn’t on my long list of ideas, but once I began, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It pushed my creativity in the best way, and I didn’t stop until it matched the vision in my head. Giving this elephant a piece of my heart came naturally. It was easy to fall in love with the design, and I had so much fun bringing it to life.
