Insightful Moth

I adore making moths!! This one is loosely inspired by the Polyphemus moth. Each piece is hand cut on my scroll saw, then hand shaped and carved. Made entirely from hardwoods, her wings are especially meaningful to me; they’re crafted from old‑growth Redwood gifted by another artist near the Redwood Forest in California. It gives the wings so much movement and depth.

The rest of the moth is intricately made from Wenge, Aspen, Black Walnut, Canary, and Cherry. She’s placed on a Purple Heart and White Wenge checkerboard backer and surrounded by a dimensional moon and stars made from Goiabão. 

This piece is part of my “mini collection,” but she is absolutely mighty and packed with so many details in her square backer that she’ll continuously catch your eye and inspire wonder throughout your space.
